The 60-second science 1% of skin collagen lost each year of adult life

The slow leak nobody sees

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, and it’s what keeps skin firm and springy. Researchers measuring skin of different ages found collagen content falls by roughly 1% a year across adult life.

Red and near-infrared light have been studied for nudging the cells that make collagen, called fibroblasts. That’s the job this mask is built for.

Think of it like this

Collagen is the rebar inside the concrete of your skin. You never see it. You see what happens when there’s less of it.

Shuster, Black & McVitie · British Journal of Dermatology · 1975

Ten minutes

What the studies measured

Red and near-infrared LEDs on your face, studied over weeks of regular sessions.

Fine lines

Less wrinkling in 4 weeks

76 adults used red, near-infrared, both, or a sham light twice a week. The real-light groups showed less wrinkling and better elasticity than sham.

Lee et al. · J Photochem Photobiol B · 2007

Firmness

Collagen density, measured

In a 136-person trial, red light sessions raised collagen density on ultrasound compared with controls.

Routine

The easiest 10 minutes of your day

No holding a device, no moving it around. Put it on, sit back, and read, listen or just close your eyes.

How it works

Two wavelengths, two depths

Light between roughly 650 and 1,350 nanometers sits in the body’s optical window: the range where blood and water absorb the least, so light travels the furthest. Longer wavelengths reach deeper.

660NM · RED

Absorbed in the top layers of skin. The wavelength used in most skin studies.

850NM · NEAR-IR

Invisible to you, and it travels further into tissue, toward muscle and joints.

Myth vs truth

What most people get wrong about red light

Myth

Light masks are for acne.

Truth

Blue light is the acne color. The skin-aging studies use red and near-infrared, which is what this mask is built around.

Lee et al. · J Photochem Photobiol B · 2007
Myth

If 20 minutes is good, an hour is better.

Truth

Light follows a biphasic dose response: too little does nothing, the right dose helps, and too much can cancel the benefit. It’s watering a plant, not filling a pool. Use the timer.

Huang et al. · Dose-Response · 2009
Myth

You’ll see it after one session.

Truth

Skin rebuilds on a schedule of weeks, not hours. The trials measured their results after 4 to 15 weeks of regular sessions. Consistency is the whole game.

LED light and facial wrinkles

Adults with facial wrinkles used red (633 nm), near-infrared (830 nm), both, or a sham light for 4 weeks. The real-light groups showed less wrinkling and better elasticity than sham.

Lee et al. · Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B · 2007
136

Whole-body red light and skin collagen

Full-body red light units, twice a week for 30 sessions. Skin complexion and roughness improved, and ultrasound measured higher collagen density than in the control group.

Wunsch & Matuschka · Photomedicine and Laser Surgery · 2014
1% a year

Collagen falls with age

Measured skin collagen in adults of different ages and found it declines by roughly 1% a year across adult life.

Shuster, Black & McVitie · British Journal of Dermatology · 1975
Mechanism

The enzyme that absorbs red light

Cytochrome c oxidase, part of the energy chain inside your mitochondria, absorbs red and near-infrared light and changes how the cell makes energy.

FAQ

Questions

Do I use it before or after skincare?

Use it on clean, dry skin. Apply serums and moisturizer after the session.

Is it safe for my eyes?

The light is bright up close. Wear the included goggles, or keep your eyes closed when your face is lit.

How often should I use it?

Three to five sessions a week. Start on a low intensity level and let the timer end the session.

Can I use it with sensitive skin?

The light is low-level and the mask is soft silicone. Start on a lower intensity and shorter sessions, and stop if anything feels uncomfortable.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth after use. Never put it in the washer or submerge it.

Can I return it?

Yes. Start a return within 30 days of delivery by emailing info@tharsyn.com. The refund policy has the conditions.
